Despite Uptick in Devices, Software and
Services Dominate IT Spending
I T investment in computers, soft ware and communications equipment represented $562 billion, or
37.7%, of the $1,491 billion of Q3/17 business fixed investment spending recorded by the U.S. Commerce
Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis. Soft ware investment represented $376 billion, or 67%, of total
Q3/17 U.S. I T investment.
Overall I T spending is expected to reach $3,508 billion in 2017 according to Gartner’s Q3/17 World wide
I T Spending Forecast. Of that total, communications services, I T services and soft ware represent $2,672
billion (76.2%), while devices and data center systems accounted for $837 billion ( 23.9%). Gartner expects
2018 worldwide I T spending to reach $3,658 billion, with communication services, I T services and soft ware
representing $2,784 billion (76.1%), and devices and data systems accounting for $873 billion ( 23.9%).
